Shimla known as the 'Queen of Hill Stations', attracts visitors with its colonial appeal sweeping mountain scenery, and fresh mountain air. But when should you go? There's no single answer, as this captivating place changes with every season giving you different experiences. Whether you want to wander through snowy landscapes, take a nice winter walk, or see the colorful autumn leaves, understanding Shimla's weather will help you choose the right time for your trip.
Summer (March to June): The peak season escape
Summers, from March to June, are the best months to visit Shimla for many. As temperatures soar in the plains, Shimla offers a refreshing escape with pleasant weather.
Ā
March and April: Spring begins in these months, bringing milder temperatures, from 15°C to 20°C. Flora brightly cover the hills and the air is fresh and energising. The summer rush is a good time to sightsee, go on nature walks and explore the charming streets. And you might get a chance to catch the tail end of snow in places like Kufri even till early March.
May and June: It is the peak tourist season of Shimla. It is the perfect season if you are planning to do some outdoor activities because temperatures range between 20°C and 28°C. Life buzzes on the famous Mall Road in Shimla and attractions like Jakhoo Temple, Christ Church and Ridge are at their best. Itās mostly a pleasant time, but expect bigger crowds and slightly higher prices since it tends to be much in demand. If you are wishing to get rid of the heat and to have that classic hill station experience, this is it.
Monsoon (July to September): The green wonderland
While often considered the off-season, the monsoon months of July to September reveal a different, equally enchanting side of Shimla.
Ā
Lush greenery: The rains turn the landscape into a verdant emerald paradise. Dense, misty greenery cloaks the valleys and waterfalls fall down the hillsides in a surrealistic scene.
Fewer crowds: The monsoon season is arguably not the best time for Goa if you are planning to party or you love the beach. It certainly leads to fewer tourists, which makes it much easier to feel a connection with nature and culture in general.
Photography heaven: With the lush landscapes and misty atmosphere, there are some great opportunities for photographers.
Considerations: Roadblocks or even minor landslides are sometimes caused by heavy rainfall, so it might be a good idea to check weather forecasts and road conditions when travelling.
